Brisbane City Council Outdoor Gallery

January 2024 - April 2024

Experience the Butterflies of Brisbane in the 1900s with an Interactive Installation by Brisbane City Council's Outdoor Gallery at West Village.

To welcome the new year, the Brisbane City Council Outdoor Gallery has landed at West Village. This interactive installation, located outside Italian Street Kitchen, uses augmented reality technology to take you back to the 1900’s when Brisbane was home to an abundance of Richmond Birdwing Butterflies.

By scanning the QR code on the nearby ply sign, you can access an exclusive filter available on Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. When using the front camera view, a butterfly will virtually land on your hand. Switching to the back camera will reveal a fluttering swarm of butterflies surrounding West Village.

The Outdoor Gallery initiative has been in motion since October 2023 and will run until April 2024, spanning across the city. This program magically transforms Brisbane's laneways, city streets, and car parks into imaginative, curious, and engaging spaces. It includes light boxes, banners, vitrines, and evening projections, showcasing art outdoors on city streets rather than inside traditional gallery walls. 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the Outdoor Gallery program.
